The taste of Spring
It is here. I can see it, smell it, touch it and yes even taste it. Spring glorious spring. It appeared first in the "singing" daffodils; Morgan pointed out these bright yellow announcers look like they are singing. I agree. I received the first of the season a few days back. I enjoyed their delivery as much as I enjoyed the flowers themselves. My kiddos hunted the choir. Then came with giggles, smiles and arms bent behind their backs knocking on the door to "Surprise!" me with springs first delight. The smell of spring is in it's rain. The thunder and lightning carry the smell of water from the sky. The musky order holds the promise of life and energize my soul. I sat a few nights back and inhaled the aroma of season's change. But to come into contact with spring, takes more effort. I kneel down and get on the ground. I marvel in the feel of spring only when my nails are full of earth's surface and it is sifted through my fingers. The sensation of spring is a soil to skin thing. Now, tasting the end of winter is more imaginative and it is my favorite way to experience the season. To get the flavor of spring upon my tongue I must look further down the calendar to summer, when my season of planting has produced the full flavor of harvest. Just imagining the the flavor of home grown, garden ripened tomatoes sets my mouth to water. And, yesterday with the budding of tomato sprouts my buds of taste sent signals to my brain. I swallowed hard, savoring spring. So with a choir of flowers on the table, smell of warm rain in the air, dirt's dingy stain clinging to my hands and the mouth watering taste of spring upon my tongue. I put winter in the freezer and spring in the oven.
